60TH WORLD’S MOST SUSTAINABLE UNIVERSITY IN UI GREENMETRIC WORLD UNIVERSITY RANKINGS 2023
1) Universiti Malaya (UM) has been recognized as the 60th most sustainable university in the world out of 1,183 higher education institutions in the prestigious global sustainability ranking, the Universitas Indonesia GreenMetric World University Rankings (UIGM) 2023. Throughout UM's participation in UIGM since 2011, we have consistently shown improvement in the overall scores compared to the previous years.
2) The theme of the 2023 assessment was 'Innovation, Impacts, and Future Direction of Sustainable Universities,' with the introduction of several new indicators, including the 3R waste management program, student organization activities, and international collaboration. UM achieved notable success by being recognized as the best university in Malaysia for water management (100% for 5 consecutive years) and waste management (100% for 2 consecutive years). However, there is always room for improvement, especially in i) Energy and Climate Change, and ii) Transportation. Further information for UIGM can be accessed HERE.
3) Highest appreciation for the collective commitment and contribution to the members of the UM - UIGM 2023 Secretariat under the coordination of the UM Sustainable Development Center (UMSDC), represented by various departments and units, especially the Estates Department (JHB), Corporate Rating Centre (CRC), Department of Research Management (JPP), Division of Research Grant Management (BPGP), Universiti Malaya Community Engagement Centre (UMCares), Student Affairs Department, Internship Training and Academic Enrichment Centre (CITrA), Bursar's Office, Security Centre, Marketing and Academic Services Department (MASD), International Students & Mobility Centre (ISC), Occupational Safety and Health & Environment Centre (OSHE), and research/academic entities (faculties, academies, and centers).
4) The campus sustainability rating platform serves as a valuable tool to assess strengths and weaknesses of our interventions, and it is a platform to celebrate our success and achievements driven by the Universiti Malaya community: staff and students, especially in facing the challenges of climate change and planetary health.
5) Together, we can take significant strides forward in realizing UM's vision as a global university making an impact on a more sustainable world.
