12 October 2020 - Universiti Malaya through the Office of Industry & Community Engagement (UM ICE) has inked yet another partnership with Cradle Fund Sdn. Bhd. Cradle Fund is Malaysia’s early stage start-up influencer, incorporated under the Ministry of Finance Malaysia (MOF) in 2003 with a mandate to fund potential and high-caliber tech start-ups through its Cradle Investment. Throughout its 16 years history, Cradle Fund has helped fund over 900 Malaysian tech start-ups and holds the highest commercialisation rate amongst government grants in the country.
In this latest partnership, Universiti Malaya was chosen as the Strategic Partner (University) for the first theme, Prihatin Rakyat, of Malaysia’s First National Hackathon – MY Hackathon 2020. MYHackathon is a nationwide series of hackathons aiming towards enhancing digitalizing government services as part of the Short-Term Economic Recovery Plan (PENJANA). The initiative is spearheaded by the Ministry of Science, Technology & Innovation (MOSTI) and the Ministry of Finance (MOF), and supported by Cradle Fund, Malaysian Global Innovation & Creativity Centre (MaGIC) and the Malaysian Administrative Modernisation And Management Planning Unit (MaMPU). MYHackathon focuses on the use of technology and digitalization as a means to improve the delivery of key public services to the Rakyat.
As the Strategic Partner (University) for this grand national hackathon, Universiti Malaya collaborated with other local University partners to organize an online free Preparatory Master Class Workshop. The aim of this workshop was to further increase and to support the participation of students from higher educational institutions who might be entering a hackathon for their first time.
The workshop has been conducted successfully on 13-15 October 2020 and garnered huge interests as demonstrated by its strong 292 registrations. From that figure, 238 of them (81.5%) were students of 21 local and international higher education institutions. The workshop offered 12 free online modules, delivered by experts from eight local universities. Based on the feedback survey form, majority of the respondents (86.37%) were satisfied with the program with 51.61% of the total respondents ranked their overall satisfaction level as ‘Very Satisfied’. Majority of the respondents (89.71%) were also interested to participate in similar programs in the future. Most importantly, interests of the respondents to participate in the MY Hackathon 2020 increased by up to 9.11% after the workshop. It is hoped that this momentum will be translated into higher participation of students from higher educational institutions in the upcoming rounds of MY Hackathon 2020.
