2 July 2020 – Last week, our second CEO Global Spotlight Webinar Series for the year 2020 has been successfully conducted, featuring Mr. Michael Yuan, the CEO of Huawei Technologies (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd. The webinar was streamed live through Facebook pages of @HuaweiTechMy and @UniversityofMalaya, and moderated by the Dean of Faculty of Computer Science & Information Technology, Prof. Datin Dr. Sameem Abdul Kareem.
Mr. Michael shared his insights from the industry perspectives about “Developing Digital Economy Talents to make Malaysia the Digital Hub in ASEAN”. Mr. Michael highlighted that the digital economy is growing at 2.5 times faster than the world economy with returns on investment in ICT sector is 6.7 times higher than investment in non-ICT sectors. As industries are entering the cycle of digitization, Malaysia has to equip itself to seize the digital opportunities as an engine for new economic growth.
According to Mr. Michael, the foundation of a digital economy is modernized ICT infrastructures that are based on 5G, Cloud, and AI technologies. These technologies would then empower a wholesome digital ecosystem and generate an innovative and productive digital talent pool. As part of Huawei’s commitment to position Malaysia as the ASEAN digital hub, Huawei launched the Huawei ASEAN Academy in May 2020. The Academy will provide more than 3,000 ICT courses to nurture 50,000 Malaysian digital talents over the next five years. Such initiative will not only empower the local talents to be future-ready but it will also accelerate Malaysia’s digital transformation journey towards becoming the regional digital hub.
